Red Flag Warning Issued 3.28.2025

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for six counties in southwest Minnesota from 12 p.m. through 8 p.m. today, Friday, March 28, due to extreme fire risk conditions.

  • Affected counties include Cottonwood, Jackson, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone, and Rock.

A Red Flag Warning means fires can spread quickly and grow out of control under the predicted weather conditions, including strong winds and low humidity levels. Residents should not burn in those counties where a Red Flag Warning is in effect and should check any recent burning they might have done to ensure the fire is completely out. The DNR will not issue or activate open burning permits for large vegetative debris burning during the Red Flag Warning, and campfires are discouraged.

In advance of the approaching weather system bringing a variety mixed precipitation, strong gusty winds up to 40 mph and low relative humidity will result in critical fire weather conditions today.

  • Check any recent pile burning and drown, stir, repeat until the heat is out cold.
  • Fires that develop will spread rapidly in these dangerous fire weather conditions.
  • Call 911 immediately from a safe location if you spot a wildfire.
